About the Masks

In the late 1990s, I began using mask-making as a creative experiment to develop storytelling and cultural exchange, connecting youth and adults across local and international communities. Some masks became icons representing specific places and cultures; others became autobiographies of personal and social concerns. The process was exploratory and developmental, building toward a body of work for exhibitions and cultural exchanges — finished masks, photography, and video. The masks below are a small sample of that work.
